Tax filing and payment relief available for taxpayers affected by spring floods

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has issued a press release reminding taxpayers who have been affected by this spring’s floods that relief may be provided from their tax filing and payment obligations.

That relief, in the form of a waiver of interest and/or penalties which might otherwise be imposed for late filing or payment of taxes is provided through the CRA’s Taxpayer Relief Program. Relief is available where taxpayers are unable to fulfill their tax filing and payment obligations as a result of circumstances outside their control.

In all cases, relief is provided on a case-by-case basis, and taxpayers seeking relief should submit a request using Form RC4288, which is available on the CRA Web site at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/rc4288/rc4288-11e.pdf.

The press release itself can be found on the same site at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/rlss/2011/m04/nr110428-eng.html.
