Inflation rate at 2.2% for February

The latest issue of Statistics Canada’s Consumer Price Index indicates that the overall inflation rate for the month of February stood at 2.2% on a year-over-year basis. The increase was marginally less than the 2.3% increase recorded for January 2011.

The largest single contributor to that rate was energy prices, which rose by 10.6% in the previous 12 months. Gasoline prices increased by 15.7% on a year-over-year basis.

The February issue of the Consumer Price Index, which includes an analysis of price changes by province and by economic sector, can be found on the Statistics Canada Web site at http://www.statcan.gc.ca/subjects-sujets/cpi-ipc/cpi-ipc-eng.htm.
