Individual tax filing deadline falls on Monday, May 2

The filing deadline for individual tax returns for the 2010 taxation year will fall on Monday, May 2 for most Canadian taxpayers. Self-employed taxpayers (and their spouses) do not have to file until June 15, but for all taxpayers, any taxes owing for the 2010 taxation year must be paid on or before May 2, 2011.

There had been speculation that, because the federal election date is also May 2, the filing deadline might be extended. However, a press release from the Canada Revenue Agency, available on their Web site at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/rlss/2011/m04/nr110421-eng.html, confirms that the filing deadline remains Monday May 2.
