2011 Federal Budget—Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit

The federal Budget tabled on June 6, 2011 included no changes to the income tax measures originally announced in the Budget on March 22, 2011.

Effective for the 2011 and subsequent taxation years, the proposed Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit will allow eligible volunteer firefighters to claim a 15% non-refundable tax credit, based on an amount of $3,000. To be eligible, the claimant must perform a minimum of 200 hours of volunteer firefighting services for one or more fire departments. Volunteer hours will be ineligible if the firefighter also provides firefighting services which are not volunteer services to that fire department.
